Fiction Writers' Workshop

when

April 23rd - May 28th

where

TBD

Workshop leader

Coe Douglas

An 6-week deep read of your fiction manuscript. We'll work within an engaged small-group workshop format, with each story getting a supportive, constructive and detailed critique of plot, structure, dialogue, setting, scene and character.

For intermediate and advanced fiction writers.

Class Overview

The workshop will have two components—craft talks with exercises in aspects of style to focus on different components of effective storytelling. And, we'll workshop our stories. Participants will get feedback on their presubmitted work. We'll discuss each story and give constructive and positive critiques using a typical workshop format which will highlight what's working in a story and ways in which it can be made even better.

Each workshop participant can submit one story of up to 20 pages using the standard manuscript format of 12 pt, double spaced type. Preferably using Times Roman, Georgia, or a similar font.

Suggested Reading

While the workshop has no required text, we'll be using Josip Novakovich's Fiction Writer's Workshop, our favorite craft book for its useful story advice and excellent writing exercises. However, owning a copy isn't a bad idea either.

We'll also provide handouts and other helpful resources over the course of the workshop to expand on what we cover in each class.
